What is the GEP selection process like?
The Ministry of Education administers a screening assessment for gifted primary students. The GEP selection involves two rigorous rounds of testing. In August, all primary three students are invited to participate in the initial round of tests, called the Screening Round. Subsequently, in October, the second selection test (Selection Round) is conducted for those pupils who successfully navigate the first round.
During the first round, children’s abilities are evaluated in:
- English language skills, encompassing a high level of general knowledge and critical reading proficiency.
- Mathematical Reasoning, assessing the child’s problem-solving skills and ability to tackle novel problems.
Moving on to the second round, the child’s eligibility for the GEP is further scrutinized. Exceptional English and Mathematical abilities are essential. The English test covers areas such as verbal relationships, sensitivity to words, analogies, etc. The Mathematics test evaluates the child’s spatial, visual, and logical skills.
