TASMO, Think Academy Singapore Math Olympiad, is a math olympiad competition that aims to cultivate students’ interest in math. Started in 2022, TASMO was opened to Primary 1 to Primary 6 students. This year, TASMO has also introduced a new format of Math Olympiad for preschoolers aged 4-6 years old.

TASMO

Held on 13 November 2023 at the Lifelong Learning Institute and their flagship centre at Novena, more than 600 students attended Think Academy’s first in-person Math Olympiad. An electrifying experience for many, especially for first-time math olympians, the TASMO exam spanned across 60 (K2) – 90 minutes (P1-P6).

Its questions are designed by experienced Math Olympians and Math Olympiad question setter that tests students not only on the concepts and topics tested in the top 5 Singapore Math Olympiads (SMKC, SASMO, NMOS, RIPMWC, SMOPS). Questions are also created to combine two or more concepts and skills, requiring students to exercise strong critical thinking skills in order to solve the questions.

“The TASMO questions were designed to test students on their ability to analyse the problem and apply strategies that they have learnt previously in a creative way, a task that might be difficult for students who simply get by through constant repetition,” remarked Eason, Think Academy Gold Medal Coach and seasoned Math Olympiad question setter for a renown Chinese Math Competition.

Even though TASMO was a challenge, students were up for it.

“Although the TASMO questions were really challenge, it is a good experience for my children. Especially for lower primary students, the exam conditions and settings is an invaluable experience with the removal of exams.” said a parent of a Primary 2 student.

After the gruelling exam, students also left with complimentary Math Olympiad resources. This includes our Think Academy Calculation Booster, RIPMWC/SMOPS Essential Guide and NMOS Essential Guide. Notably, the Think Academy Calculation Booster contained more than 150 pages of calculation techniques, practice questions and in-depth explanation that took our curriculum expert team 6 months to develop.
