The AMC8, 10 and 12 is a Math Contest held by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The only condition is that students must in or below Grade 8, 10 or 12, respectively.
AMC8 is one of the most prestigious middle school Math Competition and provides a pathway for students who are interested in applying for colleges in the US. Students with a good score on the AMC10 and AMC12 (top 2.5% for AMC10A and B or top 5% in AMC12A and B) will be invited to the AIME. Qualifying for the AIME will also help students to stand out in their college applications.
The AMC8 consists of 25 multiple-choice question, spanning over 40 minutes. Each question is worth 1 point and no marks will be deducted for wrong answers.
Calculators are not allowed. This means that students who want to do well will need strong number sense. Since the AMC8 is not designed to be computationally heavy, students should be able to solve the problems without a calculator with ease.
Topics tested includes as algebra, arithmetic, counting, geometry, logic, number theory and probability.
According to our analysis, to get the Distinguished Honor Roll (top 1%), you will need a minimum of 22 points or more. If you want to achieve Honor Roll (top 5%), you need to get 18 points or more!
Registration Details
Here’s how to get started on your preparation!
1. Familiarise yourself with the various question types
Look through past year AMC8/10/12 questions. They will give you a good indication on the level of difficulty you will be expecting. If done right, you will also be able to identify similar question types and strategies that may reappear.
2. Sign up for courses
Students who have little or no background in specific topics may require additional guidance. Specialised AMC8/10/12 courses may provide a structured and step-by-step learning environment and curriculum to ensure that all the bases are covered.
3. Timed practices will be your best friend.
As the AMC8 is a 40 minute test, speed is of the essence. You will need to schedule time to practice as well as time yourself. This will help you to ascertain whether you are taking too long for a particular question and whether you will need to use a different strategy to solve the question.
