How hard is SASMO?
Compared to what is being taught at school, SASMO tests students on their ability to solve out-of-the-box math questions. For Lower Primary students who have been consistently scoring well, the SASMO could be a math competition that will ignite their curiosity in Math and Math Olympiad.
The SASMO syllabus includes:
Grade 1-4 (Primary 1-4)
- Arithmetic and Statistics
- Geometry and Mensuration
- Solving word problems using model method (or any other non-algebraic methods)
- Non-routine problem solving (including number patterns, divisibility tests, spatial visualisation, logic problems and simple cryptarithms)
Grade 5-6 (Primary 5-6)
- Arithmetic and Statistics
- Geometry and Mensuration
- Solving word problems using model method (or any other methods including algebra)
- Non-routine problem solving (including number patterns, divisibility tests, spatial visualisation, logic problems and cryptarithms)
For Lower Primary students who are looking to gain confidence in Math Olympiad, we would suggest starting off with the Singapore Math Kangaroo as the topics tested in SASMO can be relatively tougher than the SMKC.
For Upper Primary students, we recommend SASMO as a way to build exam-taking skills for other Upper Primary Math Olympiad competitions such as NMOS, RIPMWC and SMOPS.

Preparation Tips
For beginners, it is important to grasp and familiarise yourself with the syllabus tested in SASMO. Start off by analysing the topics and concepts tested in the exam. Students will also need to master the knowledge points and formulas required.
More importantly, students who are armed with the knowledge and concepts will need to be able to apply them to questions. Once they have gained confidence in that, they can put themselves to the test through mock exams and timed practices that simulate actual exam conditions.
All the best! Let us know in the comments if you are signing up for SASMO this year!
