100% of our Primary 5 Math Olympiad (S-Class) students passed the NMOS Preliminary Round.
2023 NMOS Special Round Analysis
What we know from the NMOS team is that the difficulty level of the NMOS Preliminary Round this year was comparatively easier. Students will expect to encounter higher level of difficulty in this year’s Special Round.
We noted differences in mark allocation as well.
- Question 1-5 – 3 marks
- Question 6-10 – 4 marks
- Question 11-15 – 5 marks
From our analysis, students who master the key topics tested, namely, Calculation, Geometry, Number Theory, Combinatorics and Word Problems, will be able to enter the Special Round with confidence.
What were the most memorable questions this year?
Word Problems involving Speed
Calculations

Question Type: Word Problems involving Speed
To adequately prepare our students, our curriculum specialists have developed an in-depth study plan to develop students’ problem-solving abilities.
Most students who are taking the NMOS Special Round already have strong math olympiad foundations. Hence, the aim of our Short Term Course and S-Class is to focus on their ability to solve questions elegantly through time-efficient and simple methods. Our courses cover 100% of the topics and syllabus tested in the Special Round.
What’s next?
With the NMOS Preliminary Round drawing to a close, 2023 Primary 4 students can look forward to local Math Olympiad competitions hosted by top secondary schools. With the experience gained from participating in NMOS, students will be able to identify their weaknesses and work on those areas.
For Primary 5 students going on to P6, SMOPS and RIPMWC would be another two Math Olympiads that they can participate in before their PSLE.
Students who have achieved exceptional results in SMOPS, NMOS and RIPMWC can opt to apply to top schools through Direct School Admission (DSA). For this group of students, we highly encourage them to keep a portfolio of those achievements to showcase their work.
