Origins of Hope Cup

Hope Cup medal

Hope Cup began in 1990 in China. Over the past 30 years, more than 20 million students students from Primary and Secondary Schools have participated in this mathematics competition.

In early 1992, Hope Cup was also hosted internationally with Singapore hosting Hope Cup in 1992, Japan in 1997. In 2010, the Hope Cup and the US WMTC jointly organised the World Mathematics Team Championship. Latest to the addition is the country of Brazil in 2019, bringing hope and new development in the area of mathematics to the students in these countries.

Hope Math Competition will be held in Singapore on 28 Math 9:30am-10:30am. As the organiser in Singapore, Think Academy Singapore hopes to build a platform where students are able to deepen their interest in math and cultivate their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Why should Primary 1 and 2 students join Hope Cup?

For Primary 1 and 2 students, Math Olympiad might not have any direct impact on their streaming or GEP (that happens in P3 or P4), but the Math Olympiad techniques and content will definitely deepen and develop students critical thinking skills.

Hope Cup (Grade 2) and SMKC difficulty level is similar. Hope Cup aims to design questions that are not overtly difficulty but provides an avenue for creative problem-solving.

Additionally, for those students who have achieved medals in Math Olympiad, this provides a positive feedback and motivation. In turn, this will spur students interest in math. Even for those students with little or no Math Olympiad background, they would be able to solve about half of the questions.

As for parents, Lower Primary Math Olympiad can also help parents to clearly gauge their child’s Math Logical Reasoning and Thinking Ability. From these competitions, you would be better able to evaluate if your child would like to invest their time and energy in Math Olympiad, which they can use to apply to top schools through Direct School Admissions (DSA).

How should my child prepare for Hope Cup?

Hope Cup for Primary 1 and 2 will require students to be able to complete 25 questions in 60 minutes. These questions will consist of multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. Among the skills that students will need are calculation, counting, combinatorics, geometry and application. They will need to understand concepts and know how to apply these formulas in non-routine problems.

To help students adequately prepare for Hope Cup, Think Academy Singapore Competition Coaching Team has developed a special preparation guide:

  1. Weekly Math Practice and Live Tutorials
  2. Short Term Courses to develop mastery
  3. Mock exam and revision of common mistakes
